Waivers
A Waiver List of available players (indicated on the
League Roster by FA) is maintained during the ABA regular season. The list
consists of the following:
- ABA-eligible players who are not on any team roster
- All players who are released by a team on a
"cut-down" date (see Roster Limits for a list of the dates)
Waiver Claims
If a team desires to acquire a player from the Waiver
List, the manager must submit a Waiver Claim. The process is as follows:
- On the web site, click on "Waiver Claims" on the menu
- Locate the name of the desired player on the Waiver List and click on his
name
- A screen will be displayed showing information about the player, including
how much the player has been used so far in the current ABA season.
Review this information (especially remaining usage if the player is being
acquired primarily for the current season) and then click on the appropriate
button to claim the player if desired.
- An auction will automatically begin for the claimed player with the
claiming team entering the first bid of $10,000 (or $15,000 if the waiver
claim occurs between the end of the Convention and March 25).
The end date of the
auction will be two days after the claim date (at 10:00 PM). During
this two-day period, other teams may also bid on the player if they desire
to acquire him. The claiming team can also participate in the bidding
as necessary. Regular Auction Rules
apply.
- If, after putting in a claim, you realize you didn't mean to claim that
player, you have one hour from the time of the claim to cancel the
claim. To do so, click on the player's name on the Auction List and
click on the button titled "Oops! I Clicked the Wrong Name".
The button disappears after the first hour.
- At the end of the two-day period, the claimed player goes to either the
claiming team (if no other bids are entered) or to the highest bidder for
the amount specified on the auction site.
Compensation for Previous Owner
If a player is claimed during the first two months he is on the Waiver List,
the money spent for him goes to the team that cut the player. This is
designated on the auction site by a seller of "ABA/XX" where XX is a
team's initials. Otherwise, the seller is just listed as "ABA"
and no team receives the money spent. From the buyer's perspective this
makes no difference as the purchase process is the same either way.
Claiming Back a Player
If a manager desires to claim or bid on a player that his team has cut, he is
free to do so. However, if the player has been cut within the past two months,
the team immediately forfeits the right to receive any money from the sale of
that player (regardless of which team winds up purchasing the player). On the
auction site, as soon as the original owner bids one time, the seller for the
auction will immediately change to "ABA", indicating that no money
will be awarded for the eventual claim of that player.
Amount of Time Players are on Waiver List
A player who is cut by a team and is unclaimed remains on the Waiver List
for a maximum of four months or until October 15 (the final waiver claim
deadline) of the current season, whichever comes first. The date that the
player will be removed from the Waiver List is shown as the "Expiration Date"
for the player on the Waiver Claim web page. When a player is removed from the
Waiver List, he may no longer be acquired by any team for that season. If the
player receives a card for the next season (or any subsequent season), he will
be made available in the Free Agent Draft for that season.
Team Eligibility to Make Claims
In order to be eligible to make a waiver claim, a team must be current with
series reports. If a team has any outstanding series reports from a prior
calendar month, that team will automatically be prevented from making waiver
claims. Also, if a team's money balance is less than the minimum amount
necessary to make a waiver claim (currently $10,000), the team will not be
permitted to make any claims.
