2011 ABA CONVENTION

March 4-6, 2011

Pinch-Hitter Deluxe

Mitch Caren sits in for Shane Kack at the helm of the Appleton Aces against Phil Grabar's Highwood Grays. Mitch led the Aces to a 4-2 upset series victory over the favored Grays to advance to the NLCS.

Last Minute Heroics

Brian Hoyt manages Bill Guerra's Tampa Rambo War against Steve Malinowski's New Milford Marauders. TB was one out away from victory in the bottom of the 9th inning of Game 7 with Mariano Rivera on the mound but NM came up with an RBI single to tie the game and then Nomar Garciaparra smashed a 3-run PH homer to propel the Marauders into the ALCS.

Will I Ever Start Hitting?

Starting the series as the victim of a 1-0 no-hitter by Felix Hernandez, Charlie McDonnell's North Hampton Shamrocks never do get untracked as Mike Perry's Maranatha Praise sweeps the opening round series.

Making a Habit Out of This

For the second time in three years, Jerry Valenti's Essex Trailblazers and John Barna's Wexford Wranglers meet in an opening round series. Just as in their prior meeting, ET blew a 3-2 series lead with Game 7 being decided in the final innning. This time, Kendry Morales smashed a 3-run HR in the bottom of the 8th inning to give WW a 6-4 win in the deciding game.

The Loser's Lounge

After being eliminated from the playoffs, Phil Grabar, Charlie McDonnell and Brian Hoyt look over the cards for the upcoming season. Neal Matthews also looks on.

What Size Shirt?

Tim Weidman, Moe Gaudette and Neal Matthews select their cards for the new season as well as their complimentary Hillsdale Barons t-shirts (provided by Mitch Caren).

Some Day Someone's Gotta Teach Me

Mark Snyder poses with some of his team's APBA cards even though he has no idea what the numbers mean.

Getting Acquainted

Jay Leininger, Mark Snyder and Tim Weidman kick back after the conclusion of Friday night's playoff games. The three had a difficult night, caring for a suddenly ill Steve Malinowski.

Another 7-Game Series

The NLCS also goes the full 7 games with John Barna's Wexford Wranglers prevailing over the Appleton Aces, again managed by Mitch Caren. The World Series appearance will be the first for WW.

Standing Room Only Crowd

With all the Convention attendees looking on, the 2010 World Series goes into the final innings of Game 7 with Mark Snyder (subbing for the fever-ridden Steve Malinowski) managing the New Milford Marauders against John Barna's WW squad. The Wranglers prevailed, winning their third consecutive 7-game series of the weekend to win the 2010 ABA Championship.

Have a Ball

To commemorate the 25th ABA Convention, Brian Hoyt presents a baseball, signed by all the Convention attendees, to Commissioner Jerry Valenti.

Second Time Around

Brian Elinich accepts the 2010 MVP Award for his player Derrek Lee. It was the second such award for Lee who also won the plaque in 2006.

I Can Do This In My Sleep

Neal Matthews accepts the 2010 Rookie of the Year Award for his player Casey McGehee.

At Least Steve Gets to Take These Home

Mark Snyder accepts the awards for Steve Malinowski -- the 2010 Manager of the Year plaque and the 2010 Runner-Up Trophy.

If It's an Even-Numbered Season...

John Barna accepts the 2010 ABA Championship Trophy. Central Division teams (AM, GG, WW) have now won the championship in 2006, 2008 and 2010 respectively. Congratulations John!

Art McNally Sat Here

After meeting Art McNally, former NFL Director of Officiating who was sitting at the next table, the ABA managers devour the traditional Sunday morning breakfast at the Blue Fountain Diner. Around the table are Mitch, Phil, Brian H (hidden), Joe, Norm, John, Charlie, Moe, Tim, Mike and Brian E.

The Other Side of the Table

From the other side of the table, it's Moe, Tim, Mike, Brian E, Neal, Jerry, Mitch, Phil, Brian H and Joe (not finishing his pancakes).
