2008 ABA CONVENTION

March 7-9, 2008

Let Me Show You How It's Done

First-Time Convention attendee Gordon Stone faces off in the opening round of the playoffs against playoff veteran Mark Snyder. Gordon's Frostproof Heaters jumped out to a 3-1 lead but Mark's Connecticut Chiefs came back to squeak out the series.

Making it a Habit

2005 World Series Champion Charlie McDonnell takes on 2006 World Series runner-up Chuck Bennett in opening round action. Chuck's Twin City Tigercats advanced to the semi-finals after a very hard fought 7 game victory.

What Else Can Go Wrong?

Bob Taylor (left) sits in for Bill Guerra at the helm of the Tampa Rambo War but has no luck against Joe Elinich's Glenshaw Gnomes, bowing out in 6 games.

Defending the Title

Even though he's wearing his 2006 commemorative championship shirt, defending champ Brian Elinich is eliminated by Mitch Caren's Hillsdale Barons. Brian's Allegheny Mountaineers stormed back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the series but Mitch prevailed in Game 7 to advance to the semi-finals.

Moe Gaudette goes through the cards, picking out his players for the 2008 season.

I Can Play Too

Although he's not in the playoffs this year, Norm Babcock takes advantage of the wireless network to manage his 1970-something Pittsburgh Pirates of another league in a series. Norm is also wearing a 2006 Allegheny Mountaineers commemorative championship shirt. This was the second consecutive year that the previous year's champion provided shirts for all Convention attendees.

Pre-Draft Banter

Mark Snyder goes through the cards while Brian Elinich goes through the double-stuf Oreos. Phil Grabar takes a break from draft prep.

Everybody's Got a Laptop

Joe Elinich and Norm Babcock get ready for the Free Agent Draft. The wireless network was taxed to its limit with about 8 workstations pounding away at it during the Draft.

Why do you get the Comfortable Chair?

Mitch Caren takes on Joe Elinich in the semi-finals. With Joe providing game-by-game summaries on the web site, Mitch took the series in 6 games. It was the second time in three years that Mitch defeated Joe to get to the World Series.

Going to the Dance Again

Chuck Bennett's Twin City Tigercats eliminate Mark Snyder's Connecticut Chiefs in 5 games, earning the opportunity to avenge himself from the previous year's World Series defeat.

Isn't That Player Who Got a Hit Eligible for the Draft?

Phil Grabar and Bob Taylor scour the baseball web sites for spring training tidbits.

I Won't Let You Go Until You Show Me How To Use This Thing

ABA Commissioner Jerry Valenti takes a few minutes to set up the 2008 data disk for Bob Taylor.

I Learned This at Louise's

Color Coding the Draft Picks

Mike Perry (in foreground) uses two different colored highlighters to keep track of the draft picks. Others around the table for the Free Agent Draft are Phil Grabar, Chuck Bennett, Tim Weidman, Mark Snyder, Gordon Stone and Moe Gaudette.

Let Me Know When It's My Turn to Pick

While the other managers figure out which pitchers got Z's, Mitch Caren also focuses on some Z's.

Even Lance Berkman Eats Here

Convention Hostess Pat Valenti prepares a Saturday night dinner including stuffed Chicken Cordon Bleu and several side dishes. Yum!

Always a Bridesmaid

After going down in 6 games in the World Series, Mitch Caren accepts the runner-up trophy (2nd time in 3 years) from Commissioner Jerry Valenti.

Pink Floyd Comes Through

Wearing his lucky Pink Floyd pajamas, Chuck Bennett is presented with the Championship Trophy for 2007. Chuck has now attended 5 Conventions and has reached the World Series every time (but this is only the 2nd time he has won).
