2007 ABA CONVENTION

March 9-11, 2007

In Memoriam

2006 Manager of the Year Paul Gutgesell passed away shortly before the Convention. His plaque was placed inside his coffin and buried with him. A memorial for Paul was held Friday evening at the Convention. The Manager of the Year Award was renamed the Paul Gutgesell Award in Paul's honor.

Sitting in for Paul

Jerry Valenti manages Paul's team in the playoffs against Bill Guerra's Tampa Rambo War team, managed by Norm Babcock. Tampa outlasted the Chiefs to take the series in 7 games.

I Won?

Brian Elinich (right) wins his first playoff series, eliminating top seed Phil Grabar's Highwood Grays in a nail-biting 7-game series.

Pinch-Hitting for Al

Charlie McDonnell, last year's World Series winner, substitutes for absent manager Al Lanseigne at the helm of the Rockingham Ransackers. With Brian Hoyt looking on, Neal Matthews (right) manages his Hedding Federals to a 6-game victory over the Ransackers to advance to the semi-finals.

That's Not What It Says Here

Joe Elinich reviews some player info while Mitch Caren (off camera) tries to make his point.

Taking It All In

John Barna does his best to focus on the conversation rather than the Tastycakes on the table.

It Gets Late Early Here

Sitting at the table Friday evening, Mitch Caren is either concentrating on what is being said or catching a little nap.

Play Until The Cows Come Home

Chuck Bennett arrives Saturday morning from the airport after flying in from Minnesota. After a quick change into his Pink Floyd uniform, Chuck manages his Tigercats to a semi-final series victory over Neal Matthews' Federals.

Good Morning, ABA

Armed with his morning coffee, Bob Taylor checks the Spring Training news for possible draft tidbits.

Let the Draft Begin

Phil Grabar (center) selects Dodger prospect James Loney with the first pick of the Free Agent Draft. Others around the table are Brian Hoyt, Mark Snyder (following the draft on his laptop) and Charlie McDonnell.

Easier to Carry This on the Plane

Chuck Bennett accepts the 2007 Runner-Up Trophy after coming up short in the World Series. Chuck did a rain dance in Game 5 while trailing 6-0 that resulted in the game being called prior to being official but he lost the replayed Game 5 and the series.

I Can't Hold All This Stuff

Brian Elinich accepts the 2006 Championship Trophy from Commissioner Jerry Valenti after winning his first ABA World Series. Brian's star player Derrek Lee was named 2006 ABA MVP as well.
